I found this part of last night's Armed Services Ball to be entertaining and even moving.
It began with Melania Trump making the best speech of the day. Here it is in its entirety:
Thank you all for your service.
I am honored to be your first lady
We will fight. We will win. And we will make America great again. The mostly military audience loved it.
There is a certain amount of back and forth on the internet about whether comparing Melania Trump favorably to Michelle Obama is politically biased, sexist (overemphasizing her looks) or even racist. Now, Melania Trump is obviously a beautiful woman, as many also thought Michelle Obama was. But Melania also has an obvious grace, dignity and class that is quite striking and palpable. And that has nothing to do with politics or genes.
I'll take those three lines, above, over the last eight years of blather any time. And if you think the statement was brief because Mrs. Trump might have been at a loss for words, remember that she knows six languages.
Then the First Couple started to dance to the lovely Whitney Houston song, "I Will Always Love You." As is the tradition, they danced alone for a few minutes. Then Mr. and Mrs. Pence came out, followed shortly thereafter by their families.
But an equal number of unformed men and women from all branches of the military also walked out onto the stage. Two of them headed for the First Couple, where they proceeded to "cut in." And the others found partners among the family members.
The President danced with U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Catherine Cartmell of Newport, Rhode Island. Mrs. Trump danced with U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jose A. Medina of Ponce, Puerto Rico.
I wonder how one gets that honor. It will be quite a story for their kids.
If you haven't seen it already, I'll think you'll enjoy this short video.
Charming. Elegant. Appropriate. I never thought presidents playing saxaphones or all those celebrities fit the dignity of the office. This is far better. And you're right, this is incredibly sweet. I'll be honest, they are all in my heart. I've fallen in love with all of them. I will pray for them, and I thank God for them.
ReplyDeleteThanks Oakes. That was great. What Trump is really doing is giving us back our confidence, our pride in our country and acknowledgement of our dependence on God. This is YUGE.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post and the video. I didn't see the part where Melania said anything on the channel I was watching so that's nice to read about. Elegance and class all the way, for a long overdue change. God bless, strengthen and protect the Trump family. I fear they're going to definitely need it.
ReplyDeleteI'm no fan of the Obamas. Michelle often dressed tackily. Next to
ReplyDeleteMelania she looked like Mrs Butterworth on Inauguration Day.
Before you all wet yourself over what a classy woman Melania is, does a truly classy lady intentionally lead millions of others to sins of lust, fantasies of bondage and sadomasochism? She posed pornographically for GQ and as far as I know never publically regretted it.

I've also read where she was in a naked photo shoot with another woman. "Woman on woman" as it was described. So classy, eh? She's contributed more than her fair share to the degradation of Western culture, don'tcha think. Enshrined the objectification of woman, no?
ReplyDeleteSo you are waiting for her to apologize before she can be 'forgiven' … do none of US have a past we would not want brought up again and again until we are dead!
DeleteMy thoughts exactly, Daughter of Mary.
DeleteMy point is, it's unseemly for Catholics to be venerating Melania and trashing Michelle knowing what we know about both women.
ReplyDeleteSandpiper, you're speaking to people who are alive in 2016. No doubt, all have heard about Melania Trump's past. Was it imperative for you to post links? Is she not able to move on? Many do, after a shaky start.
ReplyDeleteI think your posts were unkind and inappropriate to the occasion.
I'm afraid I have to agree. Unkind. Give the woman a break, for goodness sake.
DeleteIt was nice to see men dancing with women. Hillary Clinton been elected, we may have seen something a little different.
ReplyDeleteI guess I will call her "classy, elegant, a role-model for our daughters" when she renounces her past. Our children are pretty savvy with the Internet and it's very likely will do a little research on their own regarding our new First Lady. Until Melania comes clean, the message will remain, "I'm a beautiful woman who enjoyed enticing men and woman sexually with bondage, handcuffs, chains, rolling in silk and diamonds. I got paid for it!"
ReplyDeleteSo what exactly are you demanding that she do to satisfy your judgement on her? Hold a press conference, televised nationally, and perhaps listing all her sins? Goodness.
