This morning Pope Francis gave a homily at Casa Santa Marta where he appeared to claim that Jesus approved of the Mosaic Law on divorce on the grounds of mercy. Or, as Francis put it, Jesus enunciated the "official" truth while then going above it or beyond it in order to engage in accompaniment, integration and discernment.
This is of course the very opposite of what is described in Matthew 19 and Mark 10. It is the Pharisees who attempt to use the Mosaic Law to justify divorce. And it is Jesus who rebukes them for it.
The Pope is fond of accusing his enemies of "casuistry" but it is he who consistently engages in it. This twisting of one of the most famous exchanges in the New Testament is striking in its attempt to mislead.
From the homily:
“But Jesus,” Pope Francis continued, “so merciful, He is so great, that he never, never, never, closes the door to sinners.” And so He does not limit Himself to proclaiming the truth of God, but goes on to ask the Pharisees what Moses had established in the Law. And when the Pharisees responded that Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce, Jesus replied that this was permitted “because of the hardness of your hearts.” That is, the Pope explained, Jesus always distinguished between the truth and “human weakness” without “twisting words.”
In the world in which we live, with this culture of the provisional, this reality of sin is so strong. But Jesus, recalling Moses, tells us: “But there is hardness of heart, there is sin, something can be done: forgiveness, understanding, accompaniment, integration, discernment of these cases… But always… But the truth is never sold. And Jesus is capable of stating this very great truth, and at the same time being so understanding with sinners, with the weak.
If I hear the word accompaniment one more time, I am gonna scream so loud!!!

Funny I heard this same sermon when I was a S. Baptist. Divorce was rampant at Cascade Hills Babdist church, Columbus, Ga. Good old Bro. Purvis can be seen occasionally on the Trinity channel. He also told us that Jesus recognized all the marriages of the woman at the well because he referred to them as 'husbands.' Maybe somebody should suggest that argument to Frankenpope. I'm sure most Catholics would buy it.
ReplyDeleteHe forgot, "what God hath joined together..."
ReplyDeleteAnd that turns the meaning quite around, doesn't it? Affirming divorce for the weak.
DeleteAmazing.
Casuistry is an ethos of Jesuits like him.
ReplyDeleteThe man is breathtaking in his audacity. Please, Lord, help us!
ReplyDeleteWhat chutzpah, what cojones indeed!
DeleteHe left out "tribunal" -- that's where we go to have marriages decreed null (mercy).
ReplyDeleteLaying the ground work for DIVORCE in the Catholic church...soon ...or just keep it under wraps and let it be as with the other "changes" made ?
ReplyDeleteThis man is a full-blown heretic.
ReplyDeleteWhy bother with one of Frank's fast food drive through annulments? Just get divorced and remarried. The Church will "accompany" you.

Reading the fuller text as above really gives a sense that Francis speaks off the top of his head - I've heard sermons like this one at NO Masses (when I HAD to attend one). The priest would just stand up there and wing it - usually a dog's breakfast - sounded much like what this Pope says. This is daily now eh?
ReplyDeleteI spoke to a friend today, a good faithful Catholic older lady who attends a NO parish, and she has heard NONE of this. Are we the only ones who pour over every word that comes out of the Papal mouth? Is it important that every daily horror be reported?
Misquoted! Misunderstood! Mistranslated! Taken out of context! Um, no. https://nonvenipacem.com/2016/05/20/francis-approves-adultery-as-the-fullness-of-god/
ReplyDeleteI trust the more erudite will excuse me.
ReplyDeleteAm I right in recalling Jesus castigating the Sanhedrin/whoever regarding they succumbing to divorce arising out of the obstinacy of their flock. [Someone should dig out the actual reference.]
We are now facing a full frontal attack upon Catholicism, from the inside/top, with the resurrection of ARCIC as another side issue factor.
In practicality, if not thwarted, a new [C]atholic Church will arise identical to Anglican/Lutheran varieties with "low", "middle" and "high" components. Such will arise by stealth and lies, coupled to the Vatican II formula for change.
Indeed The Remnant is on the horizon.
Thanks Pope Francis for once again clearing up what Jesus meant and letting us know that He was just an idealist speaking idealistically. Some of us were under the false impression that Jesus actually meant what He said. Pope Francis you are so much nicer to have around than Jesus. Aren't we lucky?!
ReplyDeleteHe also said this in his homily beforehand: "They are no longer two, but one flesh,” and so “no human must separate what God has joined. Both in the case of the levirate marriage and in this case, Jesus responds with the overwhelming truth, with the blunt truth: This is the truth! Always from the fullness. And Jesus never negotiates with the truth. And these people, this small group of enlightened theologians, always negotiate with the truth, reducing it to casuistry. And Jesus never negotiates with the truth. And this is the truth about marriage, there is no other."
ReplyDeleteIf you're gonna dissect a homily, dissect the whole thing.
Yeah. And then he went on to negate--indeed, contradict--what he had just said by saying that Jesus was not "limited" by that truth. That's precisely the point. It is impossible to miss unless you have made up your mind to. Give me a break.
DeleteHe mixes truth with lies to confuse, but those who are awake see the deception in his words.
Delete@GraceofGod Thank God for the grace of God that's working in you. You got that right.
DeleteIt's time this mad man was imprisoned within the Vatican dungeons, fed on bread, waterand prayer inthe hopes of saving his soul.
ReplyDeleteWe judge the bishops of the Renaissance Church harshly, but the more I have the misfortune to encounter this man's mockery of Jesus, the more I come to believe that those bishops knew exactly the right thing to do with creatures such as he.
MONSTERS AREN'T REAL
ReplyDeletePOPE FRANCIS IS!
