George Weigel |
I cannot take this pretentious piece of tripe seriously. I just can't.
Before I go on, let me say that Robert George, George Weigel and many of the others on the list have done much great work for the Catholic faith.
But this is laughable.
It starts with the very title--"An Appeal to Our Fellow Catholics and to all men and women of good will."
What, are they all wearing 18th century wigs or something?
Then there is a bit of blah blah.
And finally the names and titles--Senior Fellow of This, Chair of That, Founder of This, Director of That, Distinguished Blithery Blathery Senior Fellow of the Blathery Blithery School of Blither Blather at Barsoom University. And so on.
It makes you feel sorry for the one guy who simply called himself an Interim Editor.
It is, of course, an anti-Trump joint.
"Vulgar...oafish...shockingly ignorant...demagogic..."
Well, excuse me, but there's another fellow who has actually been in, shall we say, power for the last three years who easily satisfies all of these referents, and who has been doing far more real damage, at least to the things Catholics care about, than Trump the candidate or even Trump the president ever could.
Where have they been on that one?
Clinging to their endowed chairs, I think.
I don't have information on all of them but I know George and Weigel have been doing precisely that. In some instances they have been defenders, enablers and collaborators with that demagogue. And I'm talking about doing it way past the point where such conduct is reasonable or excusable.
Well, I have a family to feed too. So I partly understand. Nevertheless (in their words) I urge George, Weigel and the rest to consider the future of our Church and reject the project of the current occupant of the Chair of St. Peter. Or, to put it another way,
Man up.
Yeah---got the email from the the Georges and immediately deleted it. I'm not a Trump fan but he went up 20 points in my book when he took on Frankenpope. I stopped trusting conciliar apologists some time ago. Most are all 'yes' men to the "bishop" of Rome and I absolutely don't trust him.

Seattle Kim I find myself agreeing with you all the time.
DeleteThat's exactly where I am, Kim. I was very anti-Trump. But the more of this sort of thing I see, the more I feel drawn in the other direction, as if by magnetism. I can't say it's not annoying. :)
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine what outrage an anti Trumplike negative advertising campaign on Pope Francis would cause? Let's do it.
ReplyDeleteI actually do agree with them that Trump is an awful man who would make an awful president (even if I understand and sympathize with why some people are supporting him).
ReplyDeleteBut as for the other gentleman in question...you really are left to wonder how some of these professional Catholics would be spinning the pontificate of Honorius, the Cadaver Synod, or the Avignon Papacy.
Well done!
ReplyDeleteHow strange to find out all the big Catholic pundits were just that, pundits. It's almost like we should create a list for posterity, lest we forget down the road who tried to warn the faithful about this rogue pope and who did not. The "who did" would be a shockingly short list.
ReplyDeleteI would not have seen that coming, I admit. I am totally surprised by the number of sycophants.
Let me be blunt: George Weigel is nothing but the conservative Catholic version of Michael Sean Winters of National Catholic Reporter. They're both whores who have sacrificed their intellects for their respective ideological agendas. Michael Voris fits the same mold. He criticizes the American bishops forcefully (as he should) but refuses to hold Pope Francis accountable for anything.
ReplyDeleteFor such people, Catholicism is not a commitment to truth, let alone to the Triune God. It is an exercise in blind group loyalty. "Catholicism," to these people, is an ethnicity, not a faith.
I was baptized as a Catholic, raised as one and worshipped as one for most of my life. I'm beginning to wonder if any connection the Catholic Church has with the Triune God is purely coincidental.
The connection is still there--just not in the conciliar church and there are a lot of good Catholics there---just ignorant and seemingly unaware that the edifice is tumbling down. I used to be one.
DeleteFind an independent chapel. If that's not possible, find an Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church--the Mass there is still una cum Jorge, but at least their priest ordination, bishop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVXeXErd5us&app=desktopconsecration and Mass were left unstained by Vat 2. They are used by many sedevacantists like me in this time of crisis. Just blow your nose when Francis name comes up.

Oops sorry--looks like I accidentally inserted a YouTube address---I think it's for a Schubert Salve Regina that I love. If only there was an edit post button!

I agree with you absolutely completely! I'm unsubscribing with a short note to all the emails flowing in from Catholic related orgs who have decided to bash Trump. Catholic Vote- goodbye Brian
ReplyDeleteBurch, NOM- goodbye Brian Brown, many other blogs I visit- not so much anymore, National Review & Townhill, 'Can Catholics Vote for Trump?' headlines.....Where have all these indignant and adamant voices been not just for the past three years you referred to under a 'leader' leading us astray, but the past 7+ under a president destroying our country and dismantling its very foundations!! Really! When I saw that ridiculous 'appeal' I thought how high & mighty of them. Then I couldn't help but recall how completely ineffectual they were with their 'Manhattan Declaration' that went nowhere and did vey little...as gay marriage rolled out, the HHS mandate, contraception for all, religious liberty for some, all in incremental ongoing stages while the signatories went back to their ivory towers. Their Declaration was put forth. To quoth the Raven...nevermore.
Bravo, Christine! Bravissimo!!
DeleteThe Catholics I know who take their faith very seriously and promote it to others are voting for Trump. They must be something in him that others don't.
ReplyDeleteYes. I've noticed that among friends and acquaintances at our traditionalist church. They're not all going for Trump but many are. And they're often the people you would think would be least likely to vote for a crass, semi-liberal, certainly libertine and not very Christian businessman.
DeleteWherever one ends up (and I'm still not sure where I'm going to end up), I think the right attitude is NOT to accuse the Trumpsters of being stupid fools, easily snowed by a huckster but rather to ask, what is it about Trump, his candidacy or what's going on in general that they see but I can't?
I was thinking why do I like Trump and not Cruz or Rubio so much. Trump communicates honesty with his outspokenness, instills confidence by exuding dominance and control, possesses authenticity by having the honesty to simply be himself, portrays goodheartedness by welcoming everyone, has the every man common touch by his manner of speaking (note the vulgarity helps) and is generally totally mesmerizing in his delivery. Of course, I may be taken in by all of this but the guy seems like the real deal and that's good enough.
DeletePut your trust in God and not in princes. No leader is going to bring this world back from the brink and the Culture of Death. Pope JP spoke in Philly in 1976 at the Eucharistic Congress about this very thing. That is why things are going to get much worse before they get better. Until the world places Christ as King in each heart and until the world repents of its sins and SEES them as sins, the unravelling will continue whether it be Trump or any other leader. Trump, too, will disappoint. He will, ( mark my words ) appoint liberal judges to the Supreme Court. He will waffle on gay marriage and pro life issues because he doesn't stand firmly on solid religious principles. One more thing I would add....George Weigel did a great job on Pope John Paul's biography.
